Executive Vice President Toshiya Ueki was in Seoul recently to attend the 22nd Annual General Meeting of the Association of East Asian Research Universities (AEARU).
Fifty-one representatives of member institutions from Japan, China, Korea, Taiwan and Hong Kong attended the meeting, held at Seoul National University on October 15. The participants discussed their activities from the past year, and set new goals for 2017.
As part of the year's review, EVP Ueki reported on the 11th Web Technology and Computer Science Workshop, which Tohoku University hosted on September 20 -21.
In the afternoon, participants heard from Phil Baty, Editor of Times Higher Education Ranking, and watched presentations on a wide range of issues such as promising joint research topics, and ways to enhance undergraduate education "in preparation for the 4th industrial revolution."
AEARU was founded in 1996 with the goal of promoting long-term mutual exchanges between leading research-oriented universities in East Asia. It comprises 18 member universities from around the region. Tohoku University joined in 1998, and President Satomi served as Chairman of the Board of Directors from January 2014 to December 2015.
The next AEARU Annual General Meeting will be held at Tsukuba University on September 24-25, 2017.
