President Hideo Ohno attends Peking University's 120th anniversary celebrations

In conjunction with the 120th anniversary of the founding of Peking University, a "World University Presidents Symposium & Beijing Forum 2018" was held over two days from May 4, with President Hideo Ohno and Executive Vice President Toshiya Ueki in attendance.

To mark the anniversary, a special ceremony was held on the first day. The approximately 800 guests included senior Chinese officials from the Ministry of Education, as well as presidents and representatives from 261 universities across 44 countries and regions around the world.

At the World University Presidents Symposium which followed, keynote lectures were made by President Jianhua Lin of Peking University, President Robert Zimmer of the University of Chicago and other distinguished academics, under the theme of "Changes and Constants: Universities and Civilizations during the Past 120 Years."

Presentations on higher education reform and the development of universities were among the highlights.

The Beijing Forum was held on the second day, during which President Ohno and Executive Vice President Ueki took part in discussions in a subcommittee meeting on the subjects of "New Technologies and New Economics," "Cross-cultural Exchange and Cooperation" and "Modern University Systems."

Peking University and Tohoku University concluded an academic exchange agreement in 1999, and many exchanges of students and researchers have been carried out since, notably in the fields of science and engineering.
