Tohoku University was selected as a top type university for the Top Global University Project conducted by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) in 2014. Tohoku University aims to become a member of the world's top universities respected worldwide for its Tohoku University global initiative strategies. This plan will propel the university into a new era of education and research, leading to a new global era.

On February 18, 2015 Tohoku University held its Top Global University Project Kickoff Symposium on the theme of New Developments in Internationally Collaborative Education and Research. After the opening address by President Susumu Satomi, presenters from Johannes Gutenberg University of Mainz (Germany), Case Western Reserve University (U.S.) and Tohoku University introduced their respective efforts concerning International Joint Graduate Programs that could become key to their educational reform. Moreover, the National Institute of Applied Science of Lyon (France), the University of Lyon (France), the University of Cambridge (U.K.), the University of Washington (U.K.) and Chulalongkorn University (Thailand) gave lectures on their efforts for internationalization and on the future prospects of partnerships with Tohoku University.
