Building the Bridge for Tomorrow

Some 50 American students visited Tohoku University last month as part of the Japanese government's Kakehashi Project.

During their time in Sendai, the American students were introduced to the charms of the Tohoku region. They also enjoyed a tour of Kawauchi Campus and had the chance to talk to local Japanese students about academic and student life at Tohoku University.

For a bit of cultural fun, the American students tried their hand at Japanese calligraphy, learning to write their names with ink and brush.

The Kakehashi Project aims to enhance international understanding of Japanese culture and values, and encourage the formation of a global network through youth exchanges.

Participants from this year's programme were from four universities from the American east coast - the University of Virginia, the University of Maryland, Johns Hopkins University and the College of William and Mary.
