Kabuki actor Bando Tamasaburo's tribute with Hymne à l'amour

Tohoku University presents the second instalment of the 2018-19 Four Seasons Program.

Renowned Kabuki actor Bando Tamasaburo will pay tribute to the late, great Japanese singer and actress, Fubuki Koshiji at Kawauchi Hagi Hall on July 28.

Originally a member of the Japanese all-female musical theatre troupe: Takarazuka Revue, Koshiji specialized in performing the male roles in theatre productions. After leaving the troupe in 1951, she went on to make a career in film and music.

Influenced by French singer Édith Piaf, Koshiji released a Japanese-language cover of Piaf's "Hymne à l'amour." It became one of her signature songs, amassing sales of more than two million copies.

On July 28, in a unique collaboration, Bando Tamasaburo who plays the female roles in Kabuki theatre, will perform alongside Takarazuka stars: Tsubasa Makoto and Asato Shizuki. Like their predecessor Koshiji, Makoto and Shizuki also play the male roles in Takarazuka's productions.

The programme will include well-known chanson: Les Feuilles, Hymne à l'amour, Non, je ne regrette rien and La Vie En Rose.

Bando Tamasaburo was awarded the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres by the French government in 1991 and 2013 for his contribution to the arts. In 2012, he was designated a Living National Treasure by Japan.
