The Computation Theory Laboratory at Tohoku University's Graduate School of Information Sciences is recruiting for the following position.

Job Description

1. Research
   - Conduct research in the area of expertise. Candidates who can promote international collaborative research or industry-academia joint research are preferred
2. Education
   - Teach graduate courses and supervise graduate students in their research.
3. Administration
   - Participate in internal administrative duties.

Note: The Graduate School of Information Sciences is an independent graduate school. Undergraduate education will be conducted through a concurrent appointment with the Department of Electrical, Information and Physics Engineering (School of Engineering), in collaboration with faculty members from the School of Engineering, including lectures, training, and supervision of undergraduate research.

Qualifications

• A doctoral degree
• Demonstrated achievements in research and teaching, with strong motivation to continue engaging in both
• Ability to teach undergraduate and graduate courses
• Ability to supervise master's and doctoral theses
• Ability to provide instruction and research supervision in English
• Ability to teach courses and perform university duties in Japanese
• Willingness to actively participate in internal administration and external outreach and collaboration

The Computation Theory Laboratory conducts cutting-edge academic research and education in the theory of computation, learning theory, machine learning, pattern recognition, and intelligent information processing.

The Laboratory focuses on developing theories and technologies that support the recognition, understanding, and utilization of diverse forms of information, particularly image and video data. Its research covers a broad range of topics, from foundational areas such as algorithms and learning theory to applied technologies including machine learning, pattern recognition, and perceptual information processing.

As artificial intelligence technologies continue to advance, intelligent information processing - which extracts knowledge from massive amounts of data to enable advanced recognition, reasoning, and decision-making - is becoming increasingly important as a key component of societal infrastructure. The Laboratory conducts comprehensive research ranging from fundamental theory to practical applications, with the aim of developing intelligent information systems that help address real-world challenges and fostering the next generation of researchers in information science.
