Date Set for Rescheduled 2021 Entrance Ceremony

Due to the sudden rise in the number of new COVID-19 cases in Miyagi earlier this year, Tohoku University decided to postpone the 2021 Entrance Ceremony that was originally scheduled for April 2.

Recognising that the entrance ceremony is an important milestone for students in Japan, the university says it will now hold the rescheduled event on August 9.

There will be two short ceremonies on that day - one for all first year undergraduates, and the other for first year graduate students and second year undergraduates, whose entrance ceremony was also cancelled last year. First year graduate students and second year undergraduates who wish to participate must pre-register their interest before June 25.

As always, the ceremony will also be streamed live online.

Date: August 9, 2021
*All students must bring their ID card.
For 1st year undergraduate students:
9:30 to 9:50 am (doors open at 8:00 am, please be seated by 9:10 a.m.)

For 2nd year undergraduate students and 1st year graduate students
(pre-event registration required here):
12 noon to 12:20 p.m. (doors open at 10:30 am, please be seated by 11:40 a.m.)

Venue: Kamei Arena Sendai
(nearest subway station is Tomizawa).
There is no public parking in the area on that day so please take public transportation.

Only students directly involved in the two ceremonies will be allowed into the arena. To ensure safe physical distancing at the ceremony, family and friends may not attend, but are encouraged to watch the live stream from home. The university also asks that family and friends refrain from waiting around the arena or in the adjacent Tomizawa Park.

Students participating in the ceremonies should be appropriately dressed and must adhere to the university's infection prevention measures. These include wearing a mask and maintaining physical distance from other people.

As with all best-laid plans, these might change depending on the pandemic situation in Miyagi prefecture and Sendai city, so please be prepared for updates closer to the time and check the university's websites regularly.
