Distinguished Professors 2015

Tohoku University has named seven faculty members Distinguished Professors. They were recognized by a select committee of vice presidents and department heads as experts in their field of study. The title will be effective from April 1, 2015.

The Distinguished Professor System is a program that supports professorial staff who have made a sustained contribution of educational excellence. The activities of Distinguished Professors are expected to inspire teaching staff and students.

The title will be conferred upon selection and effective during the specified term.

Criteria for eligibility:
Tohoku University acknowledges outstanding faculty through conferring the honorific title of 'Distinguished Professor'. Appointment is reserved for current faculty members who have made a contribution to promoting globalization, and is a recipient of one of the following:
  1. The Nobel Prize.
  2. The Fields Medal, the Lasker Award, the Wolf Prize or the equivalent of any of these prizes.
  3. The Order of Culture, the Award for Cultural Merit, the Duke of Edinburgh Prize, the Japan Academy Prize.
  4. The Medal with Purple Ribbon.
  5. Recognition of an achievement equivalent to any of the awards above.
