From July 1, there will be a new shuttle service between Katahira and Seiryo campuses for students, faculty and staff.
Rather than having a fixed schedule, the new shuttle service features Mobi, an on-demand ride-share that runs from 9 a.m. - 6 p.m. on weekdays and allows users to select virtual bus stops on a dedicated app. An AI-powered routing system then optimizes vehicle dispatching for efficiency.
This is part of efforts by the Green Goals Initiative to achieve carbon neutrality on Tohoku University's campuses whilst promoting a green society.
Operating Period: July 1, 2025 - February 3, 2026
Operating Hours: 9 a.m. - 6 p.m. weekdays
(The service does not operate on weekends, public holidays, Obon and new year breaks.)
Fare: Free for all students, faculty and staff
This test programme is a collaboration between Tohoku University, IHI Corporation and WILLER, Inc. The vehicles will be fueled by e-methane and both the decarbonisation potential as well as the improvement of mobility convenience through next-generation transportation services will be evaluated during the seven-month run.
This Carbon Neutral Mobility System initiative is part of the Council for Science, Technology and Innovation (CSTI)'s Cross-ministerial Strategic Innovation Promotion Programme (SIP), which is implementing a "smart energy management system" under its third phase.
